Designed for a time when the rich and powerful -- such as President Grover Cleveland and John D. Rockefeller --flocked to Lakewood, the historic Strand Theater in Lakewood brings the feel of a bygone era to Ocean County. Since opening in 1922, the Strand has hosted performers ranging from George Burns to George Carlin, and the list also includes Milton Berle, Don McLean and two of the Wainwrights -- Loudon and his son, Rufus. In the early 1980s, the theater was placed on both the state and national Register of Historic Places, and in the 1990s it received a multi-million dollar renovation.
