It may be small, but Hoboken has extra-large options when it comes to dining choices -- and pizza is no exception.
There are champs and chumps to be found in the Mile Square City. Two of Hoboken's top choices happen to exist on bustling Washington Street and are diagonally across from each other on the 600 block.
Benny Tudino's, which opened in 1968, has a longstanding rep for serving large slices. The Original H&S Giovanni's, usually referred to as Giovanni's, takes pride in serving pies with a special blend of sauce and cheese.
So who serves the better slice? Metromix Jersey Shore recently put these pizza joints to the (taste) test.
BENNY TUDINO'S PLAIN SLICE
Cost (with small fountain Coke): $4.
Size (tip to crust): About 14 inches.
Cheese and sauce distribution: The cheese dominates; the most sauce can be found just before the crust.
The oil factor: Very little -- there's no need to blot the slice with a napkin.
Crust: Soft, almost pretzel-like.
Temperature: Warm -- you can eat the slice right away and not burn the roof of your mouth, and the cheese doesn't stretch with each bite.
Taste: Slightly salty, not unlike a slice on the Jersey Shore boardwalk.
GIOVANNI'S PLAIN SLICE
Cost (with bottle of Snapple iced tea): $4.50.
Size (tip to crust): About 10 inches.
Cheese and sauce distribution: More cheese than sauce and not as much sauce as a Benny Tudino's slice.
The oil factor: Very little -- there's no need to blot or drain.
Crust: Slightly crispy.
Temperature: Warm and ready to eat right away, with no cheese stretching issues.
Taste: There's a hint of salt, but not as much as Benny Tudino's.
THE WINNER: Both slices go the distance, but Benny Tudino's gets the edge because its slice is bigger and saltier (and serving fountain Coke always scores extra points).
