The original building that now houses the American Hotel was built in 1824 as a stagecoach stop and was later enlarged in 1928. In 2004 the restaurant/tavern closed due to a fire code violation; it went through an actual fire in 2005, which damaged a large part of the historic structure.
The new owner has re-opened the hotel in hopes to stimulate downtown Freehold's economy with 100 new, full-time and part-time jobs that will be needed. There are 20 rooms available, three banquet rooms, two bars and a wood paneled restaurant with window facing the main street. There is also a small spa on the second floor with services including, manicures, pedicures, massages and other treatments.
The hotel's restaurant, Market Yard Grille, offers American cuisine in a fine dining atmosphere.
