A Soul comes home
Midway through his show at the Watermark on Tuesday night, Greg Attonito let out a sigh of relief. "OK," he told the crowd, "this is going all right."
He had reason to be happy: Attonito was performing at the swank lounge on the Asbury Park boardwalk in celebration of his new solo record, "Natural Disaster," which was released that day.

The faithful members of Asbury Park's music scene turned out for Attonito's super-chill and intimate set, which drew on most of the six tracks from "Natural Disaster," including standouts "Volcano" and "Teardrops." It was an intimate and relaxed way to experience new material by a punk rock hero who made the most of the opportunity to turn down the volume for one night.
Attonito, who played acoustic guitar for most of the night, switched to ukulele for a winning cover of Sick of It All's "Good Looking Out" and paid tribute to his seaside surroundings with a beachy take on Tom Waits' "Jersey Girl."
Attonito also tipped his hat to his day job by working through a pair of stripped-down Souls tunes: "Say Anything" from the band's 1997 self-titled album and "The Something Special" from 2001's "How I Spent My Summer Vacation," which was re-worked as a lovely duet between Attonito and his wife, Shanti Wintergate.
