Frank Turner at the Stone Pony
On Friday, Nov. 5, two of the biggest talents in rootsy punk rock held court for a free show at the Stone Pony in Asbury Park: Lucero and Frank Turner.
Fronted by Ben Nichols, Lucero added a dash of southern soul to their blend of country and punk on their most recent LP, last year's "1372 Overton Park," and plenty of material from that album, including "The Devil and Maggie Chascarillo," "Can't Feel a Thing" and "Mom" were knocked out of the park on Friday night by an eight-man strong version of Lucero which included a horn section, plenty of keyboards and Nichols' weather-beaten vocals.
Over the course of three LPs - the most recent of which being last year's "Poetry of the Deed" - Frank Turner has proven himself to be one of the best songwriters and most engaging live performers of his generation. During his set on Friday night Turner showcased much of his finest material, including "Long Live the Queen," "Try This at Home" and "Reasons Not to Be an Idiot" as well as a number of new songs, among them the crowd-pleasing sing-along "I Still Believe."
