The name may be new, but the Izod Center has been bringing the big acts to Jersey since it first opened as the Brendan Byrne Arena in 1981 with a run of sold-out shows by Bruce Springsteen. Springsteen has performed at the 20,000-seat area more than 40 times, including a run of 15 sold-out shows in 1999. Through the years, the venue, formerly known as Continental Airlines Arena, also has hosted U2, Eric Clapton, Bon Jovi, Madonna and many others, and it was named "Arena of the Year" eight times by Performance Magazine.
