Miss TK and the Revenge: Ready to 'Party'
Early in the proceedings on "The Ocean Likes to Party Too," the newest album by Asbury Park-based dance-rock outfit Miss TK and the Revenge, front-woman Tannis "Miss TK" Kristjanson lays out some lyrics that could serve as instructions on how to best enjoy the album: "Shut up and sing to the music playing all night, get up and dance, keep it grooving all right."
Simply put, if you're ready to head to the beach and party like it's 1981, then "The Ocean Likes to Party Too" is an album for you. And if you want to experience the band live, Miss TK and the Revenge will be performing at 8 p.m. Saturday (Aug. 14) at the Saint, 601 Main St., Asbury Park.
Led by Kristjanson on vocals and her husband, Lifetime singer Ari Katz, on drums, Miss TK and the Revenge is a sextet boasting a spunky retro vibe that results in a sound akin to Gary Numan or the Human League fronted by a relatively subdued Central Jersey version of Yeah Yeah Yeahs singer Karen O.
Released this July on Ernest Jenning Records, "The Ocean Likes to Party Too" was recorded and mixed by Alap Momin of alt-hip-hop duo Dalek at Deadverse Studio in Union City, and overall the CD has a fuzzy, warts-and-all throwback eletro-pop sound which these days can be enjoyed either genuinely or ironically to a similarly satisfying effect.
Clocking in at under 40 minutes with most songs lasting around two or three minutes, this is a refreshingly unique slice of Jersey pop. It's the type of album where you'll feel it and get into the groove or you won't; personally, I had a lot of fun with it.
And, along with being a great time, "The Ocean Likes to Party Too" also helps out a good cause: according to a news release, a portion of the of proceeds from sales of the album will be donated to the Surfrider Foundation to aid in the organization's efforts with the recent Gulf oil spill.
Miss TK and the Revenge will be performing at 8 p.m. Saturday (Aug. 14) at the Saint, 601 Main St., Asbury Park. Tickets are $10. For more information, call (732) 775-9144 or visit the Saint's official website, http://www.thesaintnj.com.
