No film fan could argue with the claim that director Martin Scorsese knows a thing or two about music in the movies. (For proof, check out "Layla" in "Goodfellas," "Comfortably Numb" in "The Departed" and "Gimme Shelter" in, well, just about every one of his pictures.)
And, whether through documentaries ("The Last Waltz," "No Direction Home: Bob Dylan," "Shine a Light") or feature films ("The Aviator," "Raging Bull") the director has also never had a problem bringing the lives of iconic figures in American culture to the big screen.
Anyone in Hoboken looking to claim that they were the first to hear the next big thing in pop music, take notice: Canadian synth-pop artist Lights is about to embark on a two-week U.S. tour, and the jaunt is set to kick off in the Mile Square City with a show Feb. 6 at Maxwell's on Washington Street.
The timing of Lights' tour is spot-on, considering that the second single from her self-titled 2008 EP was "February Air," a song that was also featured in an Old Navy commercial last year.

Winners of the eighth annual Independent Music Awards were announced Thursday (Jan. 15), and Toms River-bred singer/songwriter April Smith found herself in the winner's circle, alongside artists such as Martin Sexton, Dengue Fever and Jeff Healey.
Smith was awarded in the category of best pop/rock song for her track "Colors," a live version of which was released in 2008 on her "Live from the Penthouse EP," which was nominated for an IMA in the category of best live album.
