West coast rockers are set to play Red Bank for a good cause
Thursday was an atypical night for Rufus Wainwright. From his 1998 self-titled debut album through his latest studio offering, 2007's "Release the Stars," the singer has often surrounded his highly theatrical voice with ornate and elaborate orchestration and arrangements.
However, when he took the stage at Red Bank's Count Basie Theatre last night (Feb. 12), Wainwright was armed only with a grand piano, a couple of his guitars and the occasional assist from his folk-singing sister, Lucy Wainwright Roche.
Of course, Wainwright also had his songs, which have been so good over the years that Elton John once hailed him as "the greatest songwriter on the planet."
Elvis Costello -- a Rock ‘n' Roll legend, cable talk show host and one of the coolest guys on the planet -- will be coming to Red Bank on Tuesday, June 9, for a show at the historic Count Basie Theatre. I know it's only early April, but I'm ready to go out on a limb and say this show has a strong chance of being the must-see New Jersey concert of 2009.
Costello, Grisman coming to historic Red Bank venue
Mandolin master David Grisman may work the names of various musical genres and styles into the titles of some of his tunes (for example, see "Bluegrass at the Beach," "Blues for Vassar," "Dawg's Waltz," "Dawg's Rag"), but sometimes labels can be deceiving.
While he may take his influences from many genres, Grisman's style is entirely his own, as he showed during his epic set on Friday (June 5) at the historic Count Basie Theatre in Red Bank.
One of pop's greatest redheads is coming to Red Bank.

From the promise by theater employees that the evening's show would run an hour and 50 minutes with no intermission to the warning that the performance would begin at 8 p.m. with no opening act, it was clear that the crowd which had come to Red Bank's Count Basie Theatre to see former Talking Heads frontman David Byrne Monday night (Nov. 3) was in store for something closer to a night of theater than a rock concert.

Before the start of Friday (May 1) night's installment of Writers in the Raw in Red Bank, summing up what was in store for the evening could sound like the setup of a joke: "So a proto-punk with blues tendencies, a rising Southern starlet, a country rocker from Texas and an indie tunesmith walk into a theater..."
