April Smith sets release date for new album
April Smith and the Great Picture Show are back, and they have their fans to thank for it.
It was announced today that Smith, a Toms River native now based out of Brooklyn, N.Y., will be releasing her sophomore LP, "Songs For a Sinking Ship," on Feb. 23, and the album is available for pre-order now on Smith's Web site.
Smith is self-releasing the album, her first full-length effort since 2005's "loveletterbombs," and the LP is seeing the light of day thanks to Smith's dedicated fan base.
This summer, the sassy singer-songwriter set out to raise the $10,000 needed to record and release "Songs for a Sinking Ship" through Kickstarter, an artists' fundraising site, and fans responded by donating more than $13,000 over the course of two months.
"Songs for a Sinking Ship" was produced by Dan Romer, who has previously worked with the likes of Ingrid Michaelson and Jenny Owen Youngs. The album features the bouncy pop anthem "Colors," which earlier this year earned Smith an Independent Music Award for best pop/rock song.
According to Smith's MySpace page, her next local show is next Saturday (Dec. 19) at Red Bank's Count Basie Theatre as part of Glen Burtnik's Xmas Xtravaganza, and she's also set to open up for the Dresden Dolls' Amanda Palmer on New Year's Eve at the Boston Symphony Hall.
Here's the track list for "Songs for a Sinking Ship":
1. "Movie Loves A Screen"
2. "Terrible Things"
3. "Drop Dead Gorgeous"
4. "Can't Say No"
5. "What'll I Do?"
6. "Colors"
7. "Dixie Boy"
8. "The One That Got Away"
9. "Beloved"
10. "Wow and Flutter"
11. "Stop Wondering"
