Michelle Williams
TV-to-movie transition: On soapy teen drama “Dawson’s Creek,” Williams’ Jen Lindley, an experienced girl with a wild past, served as a contrast to Katie Holmes’ virginal heroine Joey. Williams gained a foothold in the film world with a lead role opposite Kirsten Dunst in the comedy “Dick,” about two teens embroiled in the Watergate scandal.
On the big screen: Since the cancellation of “Creek,” Holmes has floundered playing one naïve role after another, while Williams has flourished beyond expectations in a series of emotionally complex, subtly expressive performances. “Brokeback Mountain” and “Blue Valentine” scored her Oscar nominations, while her Academy-ignored work in “Wendy and Lucy” and “Shutter Island” has been arguably just as award-worthy.
