One of the most beautiful parts of New Jersey, Island Beach State Park includes 10 miles of protected sand dunes and beaches. It offers swimming, fishing, trails, bird-watching and snorkeling.
Swimming beaches have lifeguards, modern bathhouses and access ramps. There are restrooms, showers and food concessions. Picnic baskets and coolers are permitted, but alcohol is not.
Hours: The park operates from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. weekdays and opens an hour earlier on weekends. However, the park closes its gates after the last parking spaces are filled.
Costs: $6 per car weekdays; $10 on weekends and holidays beginning Memorial Day weekend. Bicyclists and hikers are admitted free. A season pass for cars sells for $50.
Highlights
Portions of the ocean beach at the extreme southern end of the designated bathing area have been set aside for sailboarding and surfing.
Scuba diving and underwater fishing are permitted along 2.5 miles of ocean beach just north of Barnegat Inlet. Scuba divers must register at the park office just prior to their first dive each year. Proof of current diving certification is required. Diving in Barnegat Inlet is also permitted, subject to regulations.
Annual permits are issued to 4-wheel drive vehicle owners for fishing purposes only.
One of the few remaining undeveloped barrier beaches on the north Atlantic coast, Island Beach State Park is home to the state's largest osprey colony, as well as peregrine falcons, wading birds, shorebirds, waterfowl and migrating songbirds.
