Indie summer
Running June 3 through June 19 at Voorhees Hall on Hamilton Street in New Brunswick, the New Jersey International Film Festival Summer 2011 offers an independent alternative to the mainstream material currently filling most theaters.
"The kind of stuff we now see in the multiplexes is all about roller coaster rides, video games, I think they're just being transposed onto the screen and they're looking to get the widest demographic they can," said NJIFF curator Al Nigrin. "But people are getting sick of them and they thirst for the 'Little Miss Sunshine's and the kind of quasi-independent films that do percolate up to the top and get Hollywood support. The digital revolution is wonderful, because there's this huge swath of films that never will get to see the light of day, and it's kind of up to us to make sure that they have a venue to be seen."
